Burnham Library
Room 11 had a wonderful afternoon at the Burnham. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing library in our town.
Tissue Boxes for the Library
Hi Families!
Here is a quick request from Ms. Hebert, our librarian.

Calling All Tissue Boxes!
The UMS library is in need of MANY empty rectangular tissue boxes to use as shelf blocks. These will be placed behind smaller books on shelves to prevent them from being pushed back too far for children to easily reach. Please consider sending in your empty boxes with your students-- we could use as many as 50! Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Pumpkin Seeds!
What do you do when it is Halloween day and all you can think about is Trick-or-Treating? You estimate how many seeds are in a pumpkin, pull out the seeds and count!

Harvest Celebration
What a wonderful party we had this afternoon! It was filled with a craft, yummy snacks and a silly story! Everyone giggled and had fun!
New Friends
Room 11 has gained two new friends this week. We have a new classmate named Steeve and a pet fish named Pumpkin! I have such a wonderful group of students! I love coming to school everyday!
Narrative Writing

In writing, we have been working on narratives. (2.W.3) A narrative is a story about an event in your life. We are learning to add details and feelings with a reaction.
Fire Safety
October is Fire Safety month and on Monday Colchester firefighters came to UMS to teach us about ways to be safe. We talked about how to call the fire department, what to do if we have a fire in our house, setting a meeting place outside your house to meet your family, and if you get a spark or flame on your clothes, you need to stop, drop, cover your face, and roll. The kids had so many amazing questions! They loved seeing the firefighters all dressed up in all of their gear.

Carrots!
On Wednesday, second graders picked the carrots they planted in first grade. It was so much fun to watch their faces as they pulled the carrots out of the ground. After everyone had pulled their allotted carrots, our harvest was then brought into the food shelf. It was a great way to start our day!

Story Elements
During reading workshop we are working on story elements (Setting, Characters and Plot). Last week we discussed the characters (RL 2.3) of a story. We talked about character traits and how they help us to understand the story better. This week we will take a look at the problem and solutions of the stories we read.
Open House
Our fall open house will be held on Thursday, October 6 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This is an opportunity for the students and their families to come and see some of the wonderful learning that’s been happening since the start of the year. We always have a great turnout at nightly events, so parking is usually an issue. Claussen’s allows us to use their parking lot in the evening to help ease the demand. Also, we will be running a shuttle from Creek Farm Plaza. The shuttle will run continuously from 6:15 PM until 7:45 PM. Please park near Partner Tire as to not take spaces for the businesses that are still open at this time.
