Addition with Carrying

This week Room 11 has been learning how to do two-digit addition with carrying.  First, I teach carrying with the base ten blocks so that students understand the concept of why we put the one in the tens place.  We have spent the whole week practicing with these blocks.  Next week, we will start doing two-digit addition with just paper and pencil.

                    

Making Gingerbread Cookies

Last Friday, everyone got the chance to roll out, cut, decorate and eat their own Gingerbread Person.  They were of course delicious!

            

            

Gingerbread Houses

On Friday, December 13th, Room 11 will be making gingerbread houses.  Please make sure that your child brings in a piece of cardboard covered with tinfoil and a bag of candy for decorating by Monday, December 9th.  Thank you for your help with this project.  The whole class is very excited!

    

                                 

Four Winds

Room 11 had a lot of fun learning about Leaf Litter on Friday.  We learned that Leaf Litter provides a habitat for millions of small organisms interconnected in a complex food web.

What a great day at the ECHO.  I am sure there are many tired second graders from UMS tonight.  

A Visit from Colleen Hickey

Room 11 had a great time on Thursday listening and being part of Colleens demonstration.  Students learned how to help keep Lake Champlain clean.

Burnham Memorial Library Visit

We have the best library in Vermont!  Today's visit was so much fun!  Not only was the weather beautiful but we got to check out books!

Fire Safety

October is Fire safety month.  The Colchester Fire Department came to visit yesterday.  The fire fighters reminded us of how important it is to have safety procedures at home.

Venn Friend Diagrams

Last week we spent some time getting to know each other better by creating Venn Friend Diagrams. Students asked each other questions and then wrote down what they had in common.  Everyone loved this activity!
