Composting

This afternoon Megan from UVM talked to the students at UMS about how we will be separating our lunch trash after December break.  Ask your child about the different colored buckets and what goes in them.

December Fun!

It is only Wednesday but we have had something fun everyday.  On Monday, the CHS chorus came over to UMS and sang holiday songs.  Everyone truly enjoyed this!  On Tuseday, we read our first gingerbread story and ate gingerbread cookies from Pepperidge Farms.  Today, we made our own gingerbread cookies, decorated them and then of course ate them.

"Inside Out" Movie

In guidance, students at UMS have been studying and learning about the zones of regulation.  As a fun way to connect to what they’ve learned so far classroom teachers will be showing the movie ‘Inside Out’ either the Monday or Tuesday before Christmas vacation.  This movie is rated PG.  Please let your child’s classroom teacher know if you have any concerns.  Also, if you are interested in reading the movie synopsis visit this link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2096673/plotsummary

Happy Thanksgiving

We had another busy week in Room 11.  We learned how to make Google slides and pumpkin pie in a cup.  To end the week we made foam turkey's and ate our pumpkin pie!  I just love my class!
Enjoy the pictures and have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Four Winds

Yesterday, Naythan's mom came into the classroom to teach us all about seeds and how they travel.  Students had a great time identifying seeds, dissecting a Lima bean seed and deciding what kind of a travel agent was needed for certain seeds.  Students always enjoy this hands on experience.

If there is any parent in the class that would like to help Naythan's mom teach Four Winds, she would greatly appreciate the help.  Please contact her if you are interested.

Party

Dear Room 11 Parents,
This is just a reminder that our class will be having a Halloween Party on Friday, October 30th from 2:10-2:55 and all parents are welcome to join! I also want to remind everyone that several students in our room have food allergies and all food must be seen by Nurse Kelley before it can come down to the classroom. Thank you!

Conferences

We are now using an online service for parent conference sign-ups. It is the same company Malletts Bay and Colchester Middle School use. To sign-up for a conference go to the UMS website and click on the parent conference link. Conferences are November 23rd & 24th. Remember, you are only allowed to schedule one slot per child. So, you will need to coordinate schedules with your spouse and/or the child’s other parent. If you do not have access to a computer, please call Mrs. Phillips to schedule your time. 264-5959 Two other things to remember when scheduling: There is no space between your child’s first and last name (ex. JohnSmith) and you need to use a foreslash when separating the numbers in the birthdate (ex. 01/02/2011).

Burnham Library

What a beautiful day for a walk.  Room 11 had a great time looking for books at the Burnham Library this afternoon.  We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful library in our town.

Library Visit

This is just a reminder that our class will be walking to the Burnham Library tomorrow (Thursday, October 22nd) after lunch with Mrs. Howard's class.  We will leave school at 12:45 and will return to school by about 2:15.

Fire Safety Presentation

The Colchester Firefighters came to UMS on Monday to talk about fire safety.  They discussed setting up a meeting place with your family in case you need to leave your house quickly.  The firefighters also put on all their gear to show us that we shouldn't be scared if we ever see a firefighter dressed up with their mask, hood and air tank.  The students enjoyed the visit and learned a lot.  Here are some pictures from our presentation.

Four Winds

Last Thursday Room 11 had their first Four Winds lesson.  We learned about bugs and metamorphosis. We had a great time!  Our favorite part was going outside and looking for bugs!

Community Applesauce

Another way to build a classroom community is to cook together.  Today everyone brought in one peeled, cored and sliced apple to add to the crockpot.  By the end of the day we had a delicious treat to eat together!  It was a thumbs up!
